Frances Benjamin Johnston

An American photographer of the late 19th & early 20th century. She began as a portrait photographer, taking photos of famous contemporaries like Susan B Anthony and Booker T Washington. She later would be appointed by the White House to photograph portraits for Presidents like Harrison, Cleveland, and Theordore Roosevelt- to name a few. She was also a leading woman in photography for her time. Later in her career, Johnston would turn to photographing architecture around New York in efforts to preserve what was left of the city in midst of industrialization, reminiscent to Atget. 1864-1952
